Being An Artist...

I found this picture on Tumblr, and it really made me smile. It can hard being an artist sometimes, inspiration is not always at arms reach and it can be hard to be creative. This is a really good list to refer to, to keep up those creative juices.

There are many things you may not realise about what it's like to be an full time artist. It may seem like the best job in the world... It is, but I assure you it comes with it's difficulties;
  • It can be a very lonely job, so it's important to get yourself outside and take in your surroundings. There many be inspiration hidden just around the corner. A positive attitude always leads to better artwork.
  • Criticism is a big part of the job. There will be many people who don't like what you do, and are quick to be negative towards you. But it's just their opinion, you have to enjoy what you're doing, and others will enjoy it too. It's important to consider constructive criticism but don't take it to heart.
  • Sometimes, you just don't want to draw. Don't force it, you will just become frustrated. Do something else, read a book, clean the house, anything. You'll pick up the pencil again in no time.
  • It's not a 9 till 5 job. Personally, I work all around the clock. I not only produce the artwork, I do everything else in between. From creating stock lists and sales plans to promotion and updating my sites. It takes a while to get used to the workload, and you'll find yourself feeling guilty if you're not working. In time it'll become a routine, and you'll find yourself secretly enjoying all other little aspects of the job too.
You have to enjoy what you're doing in order to be successful. I feel extremely lucky to be doing what I love most and have others, such as yourselves, who support me. Even with the difficulties that come along with the job, I overcome the obstacles and learn from those lessons, continuously growing as an artist. So, whether you're an artist, writer, photographer or whatever, keep creating and inspiring others. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

  1. This is some excellent advice and you carry a strong attitude with you. There is a lot here that I should really make part of my routine. You are an amazing artist, whatever you're doing, it's working. It's good to think I was in the same room as someone as skilled as you.
